Slender, vertical in form, the plant is topped in mid through late summer with small, deep blue flowers arranged in clusters of spikes. The intricate configuration of the flower cluster is reminiscent of a work of needlepoint. Seeds are eaten to some extent by birds. The plant has been used medicinally.
